Callan’s POV
Mackenzie’s story has my mind swirling uncontrollably, my heart aching for the woman who suffered so much, in so many ways, and still selflessly gave up her life to care for her nephew who lost his father before he even had a chance to know him.
‘The photo on your sideboard in your living room’ I murmur, ‘that’s your brother?’
Mackenzie nods, ‘Luke, yeah’ he replies sadly, ‘I wanted Maxton to grow up seeing him every day, so he would know where he came from. I sometimes sit with him and tell him stories about his daddy, how he’d make all the animal noises when he would read a story at bedtime or how about him as a kid, stealing all the easter chocolate one year and giving himself a belly ache.’
The baker smiles as she talks, pain lacing her words, ‘I want him to know who Lu……
