Mackenzie’s POV
My night is plagued by recurring nightmares, ones where Gage doesn’t reach us in time, where Summer aims for Maxton instead of herself before shifting to his lifeless body. Others the gun trains not on Maxton and I, but instead on Callan, the man not quick enough to press his own trigger before he falls to the ground, blood seeping from a bullet wound in his chest as he looks at me with defeat.
I wake up over and over again, crying uncontrollably, only to have a strong hand wrap around my own, grounding me as Callan gently calms me down again, his soft voice letting me know that it's OK, that I'm safe, as his other hand cradles my son.
