Mackenzie’s POV
I pick up the phone on the worktop beside me as I hand the last customer in the line her change and wish her a pleasant day.
‘Hello’ I chirp, ‘Sweet Temptations, where we hope we can tempt you to treat yourself, Mackenzie speaking, how can I help?’
The other end of the line remains quiet, and I pull the phone away from my ear in confusion, finding the call connected.
‘Hello?’ I repeat, ‘is anyone there? Can I help you?’
Again, the caller doesn’t answer, so I place the phone back in it’s cradle with a shrug, bad connection I guess.
The jingle of the bell above my shop’s door alerts me to another customer and I look up, silently berating the hope that fills my chest only to be crushed again when a slim, blonde woman walks inside instead or the grey eyed, brown haired man tha……
