Hali’s POV
My heart breaks at the soldier’s words, the pain in his voice surrounding me, infusing my body as I share in his grief.
I’d woken up to the someone calling out, it had taken me a few minutes for my sleep addled brain to realise it was Gage.
‘I’m sorry, I’m so sorry!’ was repeated over and over again, the anguish in his voice forcing me from my bed and outside his door.
Pressing my ear to the wooden barrier, I could hear him whimpering, whatever he was dreaming about was torturing him and it was destroying me to know that he was alone, dealing with whatever it is that was tormenting him.
I hear the sharp intake of breath before the bed springs squeak, and I know that the soldier is awake. Gently, I knock on the door, calling out to him, asking to come in not even able to wait f……
