Lucan stood in the dark room, his eyes gixed in the scroll. His eyes thinned, but he couldn't bring himself to open it. He just watched the burning fire reflect against the cloth, his fists clenched so hard his knuckles turned white.
Adeline came up by the door, her eyes darting between Lucan and the scroll sitting on the table. She gave a small sigh as she took in the contours of his face, illuminated by the fire.
She could see the sadness that reached his eyes once that his stubborn pride would not let him convey. She sighed, then opened the door.
He lifted his head, then slowly turned as she approached him, her eyes meeting his.
"Your Majesty."
He turned away. "I want to be alone."
Adeline shook her head, then grabbed the scroll on the table. "This is exactly why she left you, Lucan."
