I stood at the entrance of the house, trying to piece together the right words to say to my aunt waiting inside. When Miss Olivier called earlier to tell me that they were being discharged from the hospital, I had been relieved—until she mentioned that my aunt had arrived.
I took a deep breath and stepped inside. There she was, sitting next to my brother like she owned the place. My instinct was to rush to him, to pull him into my arms, but she raised a hand to stop me.
“Stay where you are,” she commanded coldly. “Don’t touch him. He’s just come from the hospital. Who knows where you’ve been?”
I expected nothing less from her.
“I’m clean, Aunt,” I replied, though my cheeks flushed slightly, suddenly remembering I hadn’t showered since being with Jayden. “Okay, I’ll go take a quick show……
