His expression suddenly became a smooth mask. “What for? I get to do what I want,” he said flippantly. “Anyway, I should drive you back. Unless you want me to beg “you on my knees again,” he added with a smirk.
I didn’t react in embarrassment that time, because I could tell that he had only thrown that comment in to change the subject. He apparently hadn’t been comfortable with the conversation about his mother. I felt like I had gotten a glimpse beneath his perfect surface, and it gave me an equal footing with him that I hadn’t had before. He wasn’t impenetrable. Somewhere under there was vulnerability.
