“He responded with a startled expression that became dismayed. “No,” he denied. “Of course, I don’t think that.”
“But that’s what you just said,” I told him. “Good luck with that,” I imitated him. “That means you don’t think I can make friends.”
“It’s not you, Ella. It’s other people. Most of them are just users who only like you when they can get something from you. That’s what I meant by wishing you luck finding real friends.”
“Oh,” I responded, feeling somewhat mollified. “Well, I don’t think that everyone is like that, but I’m not rich like you, so I don’t have anything they can use me for anyway.”
He gave me an enigmatic look. “Don’t be so sure.”
