After Ivan left, he looked back several times as he drove away, seeming hesitant to leave me, but I didn't let him stay. I knew he was safer inside the car than beside me now.
I was left alone in the middle of the wheat field.
Silence, a cold breeze, and a feeling as if someone was watching. I looked towards the forest to the east. The leaves weren't moving much, but one by one, shadows glided along the edge of the field, very fast, very light, almost inaudible to the wind.
I remained still, sensing my surroundings. I felt the ground beneath my feet, trying to follow the sensation left by the shadow.
A sudden cold gust of wind. Different. It wasn't an ordinary breeze. It smelled foul, metallic, like blood mixed with ash.
"Come out," I said softly but firmly.
No one answered, but ……
