Sara POV
"You ready?" I heard Drew shout while tapping on the door. I had just finished getting dressed in the clothes he left out for me, a pair of soft grey shorts that skimmed my knees and a white vest top. On this occasion, the clothes I had borrowed were Drews. I had yet to have any clothes of my own. I had mentioned to Drew that he might want to take me home to get my own, but his face went cold, saying nothing more than he did not feel it was a good idea for me to return. The truth is, I love being here and I don't really want to go back home, so for now I am more than happy to wear clothes 2 sizes too big - thank gosh for the elastic!
"Sure am. What's the plan?" I replied, walking out of the room and closing the door behind me. He is leaving with one leg bent, foot on the wall and his arms crossed. He has a blue cap on his head and his head down to the ground, from which he looks up when he hears the door shut. I could have sworn his eyes flashed black, but it was so minuscule a moment I can't be sure of what I saw. He let out a small cough, "Shall we?" as we walked down the corridor he placed his hand on the small of my back, sending gentle tingles up and down my spine.
He shows me around for hours. It feels like we must have explored everywhere. The shops, the pack houses and schools, but when I suggested this to Drew he only laughed, and said he couldn't possibly show me everything in a few hours. He explains that Domilia is huge in size and there are multiple packs that reside here, however, his father is the alpha of alphas here. Overall, most of the packs are run by family members, his aunties, uncles, his father's younger siblings and some cousins. He told me, that walking this way, it would take weeks to get to the borders, maybe longer. I doubted whether this was true. I could never imagine that it was so big here.
We arrive at a clearing, some outdoor seating arrangements dotted about and more wolves just going about their business. "Alpha Drew, I do hope you are well. Do you have time to honour us with a spot of lunch?" An older woman asked hope in her voice.
"I'm afraid not Mary. Could I ask you to sit Sara down for some lunch and a spot to drink? Please regard her as my guest." Drew responds to the lady with long grey hair.
"You're not staying?" I ask disheartened.
" 'fraid not, I have to run the perimeter and catch up on a few duties"
Trying hard not to let my disappointment show, I smiled and accepted the seat he pulled out for me at one of the outdoor tables. He brings himself down to eye level, so close I can feel his breath on my skin "I will be back for you soon." We pause, staring at each other, neither one of us wanting the time we are sharing to end. The tension in the air felt like electricity, his lips were so close. Never have I wanted to reach into them with my own more. The same temptation seemed clear in his mind, the gap slowly closing between us, so close I could feel his body on mine though we had not yet touched. Slam! An ice-cold glass of water was placed on the table by the omega Mary Drew had previously spoken to. She said nothing and quickly left the table. "Hmmm." He closed his eyes, mustering the strength to stand and straightened up. Blood rushed to my cheeks and when he looked down at me my cheeks burned. "Soon.", was all he said, but it was enough to send the heat from my cheeks rushing to my core. I am in trouble - I laugh at myself.
Twiddling with a long white straw in the water, I gazed at the different people around me. In the far corner, a group of children were playing a game of tag. They looked around the age of 10 except for 1 small boy who could have been a few years younger. The omegas ran to different tables, serving the wolves that came and left after a quick drink or a small bite - the wolves never seemed to hang around long. They never seemed to take the time to appreciate what they were having, it was more like a means to an end. Just filling a hole. The omegas brought me a type of food I had never seen before, nor did they explain what it was. No matter how many times I said thank you or smiled, they did not acknowledge me or look pleased I was there. So in uncomfortable silence, I sat eating the plate of delicious, soft, nameless, food, finding an escape from my embarrassment in the joy brought by watching the children play.
Every day is much the same for the next week. We have breakfast with the family, and then Drew gets up, showing me somewhere new, ending with lunch in the clearing. The omegas still do not speak to me or act like I'm even there, but sadly, I've become used to them by this point. Every day I am served something new and, although I am none the wiser of what I am eating, it always tastes incredible, so I do not mind in the slightest. The children seem to meet and play there most days, many of them have begun to recognize me and smile. The youngest of the group - I believe his name is Demetrius, from what I have heard even gives me a wave now. His little act of kindness always makes my day.
This morning, however, Edward suggested Drew keep me company for lunch, that he would be happy to run the perimeter while sending a quick wink in my direction. I have grown very fond of the Alpha in recent days, he treats me with a kindness I have never known as if I was a member of the family. He does confuse me, though for some days he will quickly change his persona, to Mr Alpha man, which, of course, I respect - it just feels like he's giving me whiplash.
For our morning journey, today Drew took me to see the pack library. It is the most beautiful library I have ever seen, with more books than I knew existed. Among the books, there were scrolls of handwritten memoirs of pack history dating back thousands of years. It is said that in each generation a keeper will be named, who will dictate the truths of the pack with great honesty. I ran my fingers across the books and picked one up to smell, the scent of a good book was heavenly to me. "Had I known you would love it this much, I would have brought you here sooner." Drew chuckled. "How could I not!" I counter, "I have never seen so many books in all my life."
"You find enjoyment in reading?" He checked.
"I love reading. It used to be an escape for me, the stories I would read - they were magical and opened my mind to other worlds." I reddened saying the words out loud. Where I am from, a woman should not read nor think too much.
Drew gave me a huge toothy smile, showing his perfect white teeth. "I shall inform the librarian you are welcome here whenever your heart desires." I thanked him sincerely and he let me grab a book to take back with me. Interested in discovering more about my new friends, I chose the book "Wolves: through the ages". Being a thick book, I figure it will take me a while to get through it. As if on cue my stomach grumbles, I have become so used to eating at set times, my body gives away my secrets before I am able to realise them for myself.
At the clearing, Drew shouts over an omega named Marcus, asking for two of his favourite and giving him a shoulder pat as thanks. They share a joke before taking his seat with me. "Drew!" A beautiful, long-haired woman yells. Turning to see who called, he excused himself from the table and made his way over to her. They are too far away for me to hear anything, it seems like a heated discussion - she breaks eye contact with Drew regularly to send looks of disgust my way. A feeling of malaise washed over me. She is a tall slender woman, her long dark chocolate hair flows down her back skimming her bottom, and her pleasing strapless turquoise dress pops against her beautiful olive skin. Another man joins the conversation. From his appearance I suspect that it is Ezra - I've heard about him occasionally over breakfast. I shift uncomfortably in my seat, unsure where to look as they all stare at me for an awfully long time. Drew returns to me looking guilty. He sighs defeated, apologising he couldn't stay as something needs taking care of, but promises to make it up to me. He quickly leaves, Ezra joining him. The woman did not move for some time, her eyes burning into me as I pretended not to notice, she eventually gave up and left.
During my time at lunch, as always, I found myself watching the kids play. Demetrius approaches me, his hands hidden behind his back. "Hi, it's Demetrius, isn't it?" I gently ask.
"You know my name." His eyes widened excitably.
I nodded with an uncontrollable smile plastered on my face "It's nice to finally meet you". He pulled his arms out from behind his back and in his hands he gripped a single stunning flower, with pink pointed petals and a tangelo. "You love Tangelos, so I got one for you."
I was completely in awe of his kind, kind soul. "For me, what did I do to deserve this?"
"You looked sad today and I like it when you smile. Would you like to play tag with us, miss?"
"My name is Sara and I would love to play." I turned towards the omega who was approaching to clear the table. "Thank you it was delicious" She looked at me in shock, then to Demetrius. He reached up to hold my hand, smiling, which I happily returned. The omega, perplexed, couldn't help but smile and stare as we walked over to the other kids.
"Hey guys, this is Sara. She is going to play with us!" The children welcomed me with open arms and we spent a good couple of hours, laughing and playing tag- which I have to say is harder than I thought it would be to keep up with the children. I call time out saying I need a break, a mist of sweat covering my skin. A group of males passed, glaring at me and the kids - I turned my back trying to ignore the hostility. "Step away from my kid you disgusting human!" Abruptly, I found myself on the floor, the dry dirt creating a brown cloud all around me. I looked up and saw a large, muscly man going red in the face with rage, he had a buzz cut and the shirt he would be wearing thrown over his shoulder. He pushed Demetrius behind him as if taking him out of sight would guard him from me. I resented him for insinuating I would harm the child. A strong wind pushed through the clearing, this seemed to fuel the anger building in the man. The veins in his arms were more pronounced every second, the sound of bones cracking filled the air, and his eyes altered to a now yellow tone. He was shifting - knowing who he was after left me fearful.
I looked around at the children who seemed to be shaken due to the situation. I pointed a finger at the half-wolf half-man, swelling a rock in my throat as if chastising a naughty child, "Stop it, that's enough you... you... you... big bully!" A few of the men passing could not help but guffaw at me.
"You ok Sara?" A set of petite hands grabbed me and spun me to face her. In front of me stood Katie, amused at the outburst she had witnessed. "Yes I'm fine, let's just leave it. I would hate for you to get hurt because of me," I told her, trying to suggest we walk away. She smirks with a crooked smile as if she knew something nobody else did. She turned to face the wolf. Her voice boomed in a tone I had never heard before "How dare you! How dare you disrespect our Alpha's guest?!" The wolf let out a whine and all around each and every person stopped moving their necks bared to Katie. "Listen closely all, should anyone disrespect our guest again there will be consequences. That is all." She did not look twice at the wolves, she placed her hand on my shoulder. "Come on, let's go shopping and get you some clothes that fit you."
I smiled. I truly wanted to go shopping but I couldn't hide it - I love wearing Drew's clothes.
