Rory leaned heavily against her headboard, her laptop perched in front of her as an episode of Crash Landing on You unfolded on the screen. The bright colors, heightened emotions, and perfectly timed coincidences were usually enough to pull her away from her own thoughts. But not tonight.
The characters were mid-argument, their voices rising over the dramatic swell of music, but Rory wasn’t paying attention. Her mind kept circling back to her argument with Sam.
She could still hear his voice, low and tight with frustration.
“Rory, this isn’t just work—it’s someone’s life. I don’t have the luxury of turning off my phone when it gets inconvenient.”
Her own words had come out sharper than she’d meant. “And what about my life? What about us? Does that even cross your mind……
