Chapter 1
I never thought summer could pass by so quickly. Here I was sitting the parking lot with my brother, Ian, who wanted to preseude me to stay at the compound to finish my senior year. I was against it and wanted change. Although, I thought about trying something different. Getting away from the compound and pack life was something that I was not vibing with. We can all agree that change could be great once in a while? "You don't need to do this," Ian begged. "Ian, you're my brother, and I love you, but you can not keep sheltering me. I wanted to try going to a human high school. There will be no convincing me to change my decision," I told my brother. "I know, but you're my only living relative, and I want you to be safe. Humans hate anything that is different from them. They fear the unknown. My reasoning for driving you is what happens if they find out what you are. Or you shift in front of them. They could hunt us," Ian tried to reason with her. "Don't we already have Werewolf Hunters killing us?" I joked. Ian gave me a look as to say you are not being funny, not in the slightest with the joke you just made. Then he tries to humor me by saying, " Ha...ha, very funny. As a matter of fact, the joke was not appealing. "You worry too much. I will be fine. Now, I need to leave to talk to the receptionist about my schedule for the semester," I told my brother as I reached for the door handle and blew my brother a kiss before leaving. Ian waved at me and drove away from the school. He probably wants me to call him in a panic to have him come get me. Come to think about it, I am nervous about this. I did not want my brother to catch on and say I told you so. Venturing into the school, inside smelled of disinfectant and human perfume. I l knew by instinct that this was going to take getting used to. I'm not looking where I was going. I bumped into someone. More like I fell on top of them. The person made a grunt sound from the impact. "Ouch. That is sure will leave a mark," a male voice said. "I am so sorry. I was on my way to the office and kind of new here," I said, getting off the guy. I sniffed the air and smelled another werewolf in close, approximately. I kind of zoned out. It turns out the guy in front of me was a werewolf as well. The guy looked at me funny and asked, "Are you okay?" "Umm... yeah... I am fine. Just lost in thought. Sorry, what were you saying?" I asked. "I said I would take you to the office. Also, what is your name?" The guy asked. "Taylor," I replied. "Eli. It's great to make your acquaintance," Eli said. The name Eli sounded familiar with me. I thought it could not be Eli Davies. As in related to Carson Davies, who absolutely hates my brother. Oh great, this just got interesting. "Are you related to Carson Davies by any chance?" I questioned. "The one and only. Why do you asked?" Eli asked with a raised eyebrow. "Nothing," I mumbled. Eli and I quickly made it to the office. He said, "Here, we are. Mrs. Petty should already be waiting for you. I will see you around. Don't be a stranger," He walked off soon after. I opened the door and stood in the small lobby. There was another girl already waiting in one of the chairs near the door. I quietly sat down beside her. My wolf was also alerting me to another werewolf in the room with me. I looked at the girl next to me. This girl was the werewolf in question. "Are you new here too?" I asked the girl. "Yes," the girl answered. "Ava Klein," Mrs. Petty called. "Present," the girl near me said, getting up. "Taylor Marshall," Mrs. Petty called for me. I stood next to Ava at the counter. Mrs. Petty was going over both of our schedules and gave us both maps of the school. She also gave us our locker combinations. Ava raced out of the office. I followed close behind. "Hey, wait up," I called, catching up to follow Ava. Ava stopped and turned to face me. She asked, "Yes?" "I was thinking since we are both new here. Why don't we stick together?" I suggest. "I guess," Ava replied, like she was not sure of me. We got to our lockers and put our stuff away. I turned towards Ava and asked, "Can I take a look at your schedule?" "Sure," Ava handed over her schedule carelessly. I scanned her schedule and compared my to hers. We had all the same classes, including homeroom. I gave it back and said, "We have the same schedule expect last period. So, this just made this easier for both of us. We can sit together at lunch." The late bell for homeroom went off. Ava tapped me on my arm. We both ran into homreoom following the other remaining students from the hall. "The plan is stick together, and we have lunch together today. Unless we could eat outside. Then I am taking up that offer," I said. "Okay," Ava replied. I took the seat near the window. Ava took the vacant sit next to me. We sat silently while the other students were surprisingly loud. They were sitting on the desks talking to one another. The teacher came strolling in late after the last bell rang. "Sorry, kids. I am late. I will be making this short and sweet. I will be doing role calls. Then explain the could of announcements to you guys. Well, I can say the senior prom will be at the end of the year. If there's any chance there will be a message on the school website. The senior class trip will be camping Yellowstone. There will be more on that. Now, moving on," the teacher told the class. I sat looking out the window as my homeroom teacher decided to drag on about nothing remotely interesting to pay attention to. Taking a look at over Ava to see if she was paying attention, I noticed she was texting instead. I looked at the other students who were minding their own business. The bell rang so the teacher could stop. I noticed all the other students ran out of the room in a hurry to go to first period. I waited for Ava by the door. We walked to class together. I went through my class and hoped lunch would come around fast enough. Eli comes up to me while waiting to grab food. "How was your first day so far? Is it definitely different than going to school back in the pack territory?" Eli whispered close to my ear. "It's going so far. My day isn't over yet, and I will let you know," I replied. Once, I got my food and went to towards a table in the back by the doors. Ava was already sitting. I looked behind me to see Eli and his friends sat nearby. He raised an eyebrow at me. I blushed and looked away. Ava caught me blushing. "Okay, who is that?" Ava asked. "His name is Eli Davies. I met him this morning. More like crashed into him. My brother hates his cousin," I explain without adding in the werewolf lingo. "It sounds like to me someone might have a crush," Ava teased. "I do not," I retorted and continued eating. I am glad I came to an end and did not need Eli to see that I was blushing. Or the fact that Ava kept teasing me throughout lunch. If Ian knew his enemy's cousin goes here, that could cause a problem. I did not need that wraith. My last class ended up being a study hall anyway. The gym teacher was out sick or something. I decided to work on homework to get ahead. The bell rang soon after. I went to my locker to grab what I needed for the night. I'm not paying to where I was going again. Crashing into someone again, I heard the familiar grunt from our impact on the floor. I looked down and fell on top of Eli again. What is this universe playing a joke on me or something? "So, we meet again Taylor right in the same place as this morning," Eli chuckled. "Clearly," I blushed and got off of him. "I was enjoying that you," Eli said flirtiously. I did not reply and scrambled away towards the exit. Embrassed enough, Ian was already waiting for me. "How was school among humans?' Ian asked. "Not bad. There's two werewolves at the school," I added. "Who are they?" Ian questioned and clearly curious. "Ava Klein and Eli Davies," I said nonchalantly. "Why do those names sound familiar?" Ian mentions. "Maybe because you know of Eli because of being enemies with Carson. Ava is an unknown werewolf," I replied with sarcasm. "Wait, what was Ava's last name?" Ian asked, stopping the car in the driveway. Not caring to leave the truck. I looked at my brother and said, "Her last name is Klein. Why are you so curious all of a sudden?" He was about to answer when Marcus knocked on the driver's side window. My brother looked over and rolled his eyes at Marcus. "Nothing," Ian said to me and left the truck to follow Marcus inside. I waited in the car for a minute. Then, I got out and went towards my bedroom. Threw my backpack down on the bed and got change for the evening. I decided to knock out the rest of the homework that I had left behind. In the middle of reading "The Crucible," a knock sounded on the door. "Come in," I called. Marcus stood in the doorway and replied, " Dinner is ready. Also, we are going to have a guest staying at the compound for a bit. I believe you met Ava Klein at school." "Did Ian explain why she is staying at the compound?" I asked. "Something about her brother, Thomas, needed time to look for a bigger place. They had room for their daughter, Jewel. He mentioned his sister not wanting to share a room with a baby. I suggested that maybe she is a werewolf and that learning about pack life will be great for her," Marcus mentions. "Okay. The pack was told about this, right? They have outsider coming into the pack. Ian probably wants me to be her guide to show her around. Possibly teacher about her pack life. What could possibly happen?" I said. "Ian did exactly say that," Marcus said, lending up against the door frame. "When is she coming?" I asked. "Sometime tomorrow or the day after. Andy is setting up the guest room," Marcus replied before leaving the room. I went to dinner letting in the fact a newcomer was going to be staying with the pack. I'm going to bed that night as well, thinking about what could be with Ava being here. Would she get under my brother's skin and hopefully change his thinking with work? Or would she be a new beginning for him? Who knows what Ava could bring to my life or my brother's? Honestly, I can feel a chance coming, and I am ready for it.
