The wolf moved a bit which startled me, I took a step back and fell. I stared in awe and noticed it was injured. It looked at me and I could feel it’s pain through it’s sparkling brown eyes. It transformed into a human. I couldn’t believe my eyes. A wolf transformed into a human.

He looked at me, struggled to stretch his hands towards me and said, ‘Help’.

Cassie witnessed her dad’s death when as a little girl. She ran away from home with her little brother and did everything in her power to take care of both of them ever since. Her life turned around when she found a mysterious young man in the woods one night. He was badly wounded. And more weirdly, if she wasn't delusional, he was transformed from a wolf.

Encounter at the woods
Cassie’s POV: I always have this recurring memory: I’m a little girl, holding my dad as we are strolling down a field and enjoying the beautiful scenery of nature. I look up at him and he immediately puts on a beaming smile. I happily smile back at him. I wish that moment could last forever but sadly it can’t, well because I lost my dad at the age of fifteen when we were both held at gun point in a back alley. Another recurring memory I have, just this time, one I wish never happened. We had finished watching a movie and were on our way home when two masked men came to mug us. My dad told them he had nothing on him and begged them to let us go. They commanded him to empty his pocket which he did, but all he had on him was his phone and some loose change. They took it. One of them noticed the necklace I was wearing and ordered me to take it off, I stood still and didn’t say a thing. He moved closer, yanked my arm and immediately my dad tried to stop him, that was it. The other guy shot him. His partner asked why he shot and he said it was the heat of the moment. They ran away. I knelt down beside my father who was clinging to life. I couldn’t control my tears. My father who was bleeding to death raised his hand to touch my shoulder and said ‘Don’t cry baby girl, everything is going to be alright’. Those were his last words. A week later we held his funeral. Soon after my mom drifted into a life of alcohol coupled with dating some irresponsible men. She would sometimes blame me for his death, not like I also didn’t . She gave no attention to neither me nor my little brother Luke who was just three at the time of the incident. But I took care of Luke, he was all I had left in this accursed world. On my eighteenth birthday I couldn’t deal with my mother and her boyfriend anymore so I took Luke and left home.Life after wasn’t easy but I did everything in my power to take care of Luke, I worked multiple jobs to pay rent and put food on the table. Three years later and I’m twenty one now, well almost. I live in a studio apartment with my little brother, didn’t go to college because I didn’t have enough time and money, so yeah you could say I’m living the dream life. ‘Cassie, I can’t find my glasses’, my brother screamed as he got ready for school. ‘Why not check the case you’re holding’, I pointed out to him, nodding my head towards it. He looked at his hand and noticed he had been holding his glasses case all along. ‘Oh’, he said, then grinned. ‘Alright, I’ll see you after school’, I said as I knelt down to give him a peck on his forehead. He looked down, trying to avoid eye contact with me, ‘Um, the principal asked to see my guardian’. ‘What? Why?’, I asked being really surprised and wondering what Luke could possibly do to make him get called to the principal’s office. Luke isn’t really like other kids (he’s a little bit, what’s the word? Quirky)- he believes there are werewolves, fairies, dragons, vampires. Oh, ‘no vampires’ as he has corrected me about a thousand times. I don’t know why anyone would think there are werewolves and no vampires. How? Also if any of these actually existed I wish for it to be vampires, because who wouldn’t want to see Edward(vampire diaries, not my boss). ‘I got in a fight.’, he finally replied still with his head to the ground. I could sense he felt bad. ‘Hey, don’t beat yourself up kiddo, everyone gets called to the principal’s office’, I said trying to cheer him up. ‘But why did you get into a fight Luke?’. ‘It wasn’t my fault, he made fun of me because dad couldn’t make it for Father’s Day‘, Luke said. I’m sure I’d have beaten this kid up if it were me. ‘I understand, but fighting is wrong. Promise me you’ll never do it again’, I said with my two hands on his cheeks. ‘I promise’ ‘Alright, time for school. I’ll head by your school after work and after I see your principal we’ll go get some ice-cream’. He nodded his head in joy. When the school bus arrived he left for school. I began getting ready for work. I cleaned the house, took my bath, and got all dressed up. I sat in-front of the dresser to brush my hair, I glanced down and and saw my necklace, yes that necklace. I picked it up and opened the locket. It contained a picture of me and my dad. I closed the locket, gave it a kiss and put it on, I finished up and went for work. I worked in a Cafe shop not too far from my house, I also worked at a library. Worked in the cafe at day and in the library at night, I kind of sound like I’m Batman. ‘Cassie, table four haven’t gotten their orders yet.’, my friend and coworker Evelyn said to me as she headed back to the counter. ‘On it.’, I replied as I poured out coffee to a cup and went to deliver it to table four?‘Enjoy your coffee’, I said, then went back to the counter. The cafe was really busy today. I checked the clock by the side of the cafe and it was almost time for Luke’s school to close. Oh s**t. ‘Evelyn, please can you help me cover up’ I said as I undid my apron. ‘I need to go see Luke’s principal. Pleaseeee.’ ‘Cassie, you know the cafe’s really busy’, Evelyn said, then gave off a short sigh. ‘Fine, but you owe me’. ‘Thank you. I love you!’, I shouted as I ran out of the cafe. I’m pretty sure Evelyn was tired of me already, but hey she’s my best friend and that’s what best friends are for right? She’s the best, she has really been supportive and has always been there for me and Luke. Also Luke has a huge crush on her, he’s been rejected about a million times though. I got into my decrepit car and put on the gas, it came to life, the ‘check engine’ light came on too, it’s been on since the day I got it though. I drove off to Luke’s school. I got to Luke’s school and met him sitting alone on a swing. Almost every other kid was gone. I went to meet him. ‘Hey buddy’, I said as i waved at him with so much energy. ‘Cassie’, he shrieked as he ran to hug me. ‘How was school?’ ‘It was fine’. ‘Alright. Let’s go see your principal then.’ We went into the school and to the principal’s office. The principal told me about the fight completely disregarding what the other kid had said, but he said he’ll let Luke off with just a warning because he had been a good boy. I really wanted to complain too because whoever this kid was he made fun of my brother because his father didn’t show up, which was really messed up but I didn’t want to make it a big deal. I thanked the principal for not punishing Luke and then we left his office. ‘Alright, let’s go get that ice-cream buddy’, I said to Luke as we walked down the hallway, giving him a smug smile. ‘Yay’, he squealed, he was excited and I could see it. I knew that was the only thing he had been thinking about. Luke and I don’t really get to spend a lot of time together because I’m always busy with work. We drove to an ice cream shop, one of the best ice-cream shop in the city. We got out of the car and went in to the shop. We walked to the counter where Luke stood, staring at the different flavors of ice cream in front of him. I looked at him and chuckled a bit ‘Good afternoon ’, I said to the guy at the counter. ‘We’d like to get some ice-cream’ ‘Good afternoon, what flavor ice-cream would you be getting?’, he asked. ‘Uhm vanilla for me and a chocolate sundae for him’, I said nodding towards Luke. ‘Alright any sprinkles with that?’, he asked gesturing to show me the varieties of sprinkles lined at the counter’ ‘Jimmies in mine and hmm…’, I said glancing through all the sprinkles. ‘What sprinkle do you want Luke?’, I finally gave up and asked. ‘Chocolate chips!’ I turned to the guy and said ‘chocolate chips’ He chuckled a bit, ‘coming right up’. My phone began vibrating. I took it out of my pocket to check who was calling and it was my boss at the library. I noticed the time and saw it was almost time for my shift. ‘Luke I really- ‘, ‘Yeah I understand’, Luke interrupted me before I could finish, not sounding angry at all. He kept on looking at the show glass. ‘I’m really sorry buddy, It’s the library and I really have to go’, I said. ‘I’ll drop you off at home on my way’. I moved away from the counter a bit and finally picked the call, even though the phone wasn’t on speaker, I’m pretty sure astronauts in space could hear my boss yelling at me. He asked why I was late and told me to hurry up before I could answer. We got the ice-cream and left the shop. We got in the car, I drove Luke home then drove quickly to the library. I felt so bad for leaving Luke. I know he understands but I still wish I didn’t have to leave like that and wish I could spend more time with him. He has really been very supportive, he never complains whenever I have to leave for work, I like that he’s supportive but still, I wish I could be there for him more. I got to the library and when I got there my boss really let me have it. He screamed and told me he would fire me if I came late again. ‘I’m sorry, it won’t happen again’, I said trying to calm him down. He scoffed, ‘that’s what you said last week. Anyways, get to work.’ I was just five minutes late by the way. The library wasn’t as busy as the cafe today, this made time really really slow. The clock finally hit eight and I began closing up. I finished closing up, left the library and went into my car. I slammed the door and took a deep breath. I started the car and drove off. After a long day like this you’d expect me to go home, but everyday after I close up I drive up to the woods, it had become a routine for me. My dad loved camping, when I was little we went camping on every holiday. He would be so happy setting up the tent, telling stories, hiking, going fishing and would be bumped out when we had to leave. So being in the woods, in a weird way made me feel closer to him. So I go there to have my me time and think about him. I would sit there in my car, in the woods, all alone, yeah it’s a little scary sometimes but I’d stay there and look at the picture of me and my dad in my locket. I wondered how things would have been if he were still alive and I could smile just thinking about it. It would have been great, or atleast better than this. I miss him, a lot. As I sat down in my car looking at his picture like I always do I heard a very loud thud. My heart lurched, and my body began shaking in fear. I wondered what it could be, all I knew was It came from outside. I finally mustered up enough courage then went outside to check what it was. Something had landed on a pile of shrubs close to my car. I moved closer to see what it was and what I saw gave me the shock of my life. In front of me laid a giant black furred beast, it’s mouth was tight and pulled forward, it’s ear pointed slightly forward. It’s claw were long. I knew what it was, how wouldn’t I, Luke has pictures of it posted all around the apartment. It was a werewolf. It moved a bit which startled me, I took a step back and fell.
