Chapter One
Jenny peered through the net curtains, the sky was overcast today, and she saw the hotel across the road which was normally derelict had a light on in the top bedroom. Normally, she tried not to be that nosey neighbour but the light in that top bedroom of the empty house looked suspiciously like flames. Her hand hovered over the landline phone next to her on the telephone table. Suddenly, the light disappeared and once again the house looked as bleak as ever. Jenny raised her ginger eyebrow and brushed a strand of flame coloured hair out of her eye. She had seen something but now there was no activity at all. She rushed over to her coat which hung on the wall near the door and put it on whilst she slid on her wellington boots. Jenny was very intrigued with what she had witnessed, a little peek inside would satisfy her curiosity and hopefully help her sleep tonight as she knew full well that if she didn’t investigate she’d end up chewing it over in her mind tonight.  It took seconds to cross the road and she was on the overgrown, w**d covered driveway within a minute. The house had not been boarded up yet and a window had been broken by a brick which made it easy for her to put her head through to have a look around the large lobby inside. Within seconds she saw blood all over the floor, a spray of it all up the wall and a body propped up against a wall. Jenny could not believe what she could see, squinting she could make out nothing more. “hello?” she called out. A grunt and a groan called out. Realising that the body in against the wall was alive, she rushed over to the door and broke it down. Jenny did not even know where her strength came from to kick down the lock, but she did. She rushed over and dropped to her knees. “hello. My name’s jenny. What happened to you?” she panted, her breathing was quick, and her voice was shaky.  The man was in a black tracksuit and a puffer jacked, his clothes were congealed with blood and stuck to his chest. “I got stabbed, he’s upstairs, please called the police….” He paused for a minute and drew a breath, “I don’t want him to hurt you too” Jenny reached in her pocket for her phone and pulled it out and thumbed in the number as quickly as she could. The man reached out his b****y hand and held her hand. His pale green eyes looked so kind and caring in the little light that there was in the derelict house. He looked at her deeply and she looked into his eyes, she could see the pain and hurt. “I honestly thought I would die here. Thank you, angel,” he said to her softly as he passed out. Panicked, jenny told the emergency services as well as she could about the situation she was in and within ten minutes the building was surrounded by emergency vehicles. The second person never appeared downstairs, and she never heard a noise in the silence after the b****y man had passed out until the sound of the sirens appeared in the distance. A policewoman with short brown hair came through the front door of the old hotel, holding a torch and a g*n. “You okay ma’am?” “I am, but he isn’t. before he passed out, he said there was someone upstairs. I’m afraid I’ve been too scared to investigate but I haven’t heard anything so maybe they are hiding” “Okay” the police officer replied, and she gestured for her partner to go upstairs and check out the situation. The paramedics rushed in and helped the man, they lead him off in a stretcher and the old hotel was empty downstairs. Jenny stood still, blood covered her hands, and it was blobbed on the front of her dress. Her legs had some on too because she had sat on the blood-stained floor. Jenny looked up at the top of the stairwell where she had heard some noises, the police radio crackled from the top of the building. “Yes, I am confirming there is a fatality. Male, white. One stab wound. Possible self-defence from the second male. Over” Jenny felt like she’d heard enough and there was nothing more she could do, so turned around and left wondering what the man she had found had been through to get so hurt and the idea that she had potentially helped a killer ran through her mind. What ran through her mind next made her believe he was the victim; no killer would have eyes as kind as his and she would have to call the hospital tomorrow to go check on him.
