The Necromancer
The air in the village was heavy as the four adventurers walked into the village of brightburg that sat in the shadow of a large mountain on the border of the kingdoms of valerian and Fiona of the northern continent. Despite the fact that it was only just past dusk there was no one walking the streets of the town and it was unseasonably cold being late spring it should have been far warmer but the air had a chill in it as if it were closer to Winter. "I may not be all that sensitive to the flow of magic like you three but even I can feel there's something not right here" said suzuran a tall muscular girl with barely shoulder length black hair and slanted facial features of the Eastern continent. She had a katana on her hip and Light leather armor and a combat skirt that came just above her knees offering her Mobility but sufficient protection for her thighs and shin and arm guards padded with leather and metal plates to protect her legs and arms. "Most dark magic leaves some kind of environmental effect in the area when enough is used and necromancy is no exception." said Flamma a dark-haired boy with a somewhat pale complexion wearing what looked like standard clothing a long sleeved shirt and pants the only thing I catching about his attire was his cloak that he wore over his clothes. "Ya. Necromancy has a particularly dangerous effect because you might think it's just a chill in the air, but in fact that chill zaps some of your life force and over time can be deadly sometimes even bringing the deceased back as an undead." said William a boy with a leather shirts and padded pants with his blonde hair spiked with wax. "We have some legends about this in our country about a mist that steals the life from people and brings them back as the undead" said Tsubaki looking similar to her twin sister Suzuran except she was a few inches shorter and her hair instead of being cropped short was tied into a ponytail. She was sporting a bow and some arrows with a number of runes fitted to belts along her combat skirt although longer than her sisters coming down below her knees and sporting leather armor. "Yes but that would only happen after several years or the necromancer created the mist artificially." Flamma said walking into the village "Come on we better go meet the client, the notice said that he would be in the tavern." From the entrance of the Village it only took a minute or two to get to the center where the inn stood called the Wizards staff. The four entered the Inn to find the style to be from the Northern continent rather than a large fireplace with a chimney the Inn had a large Central fire pit so that everyone in the room could feel the warmth and if desired one could roast a whole pig or even a cow on a spit over the flames. Despite the large roaring fire in the center of the room everyone could still feel a chill in the air all of the patrons wore thick fur and clothing but more than that they looked pale and tired like they hadn't slept well in weeks or like they were deathly ill. Flamma walked up to the Innkeeper and said, "We're here about the notice the client is supposed to meet us here." "Ya. he's in the Attic room, he's been a bit High Strung these days so take this bottle up that should put him in a better mood." The Innkeeper said handing Flamma a bottle of liquor and a key. "Thank you." Flamma said walking to the stairs signaling for his comrades to follow. The inn was set up so that the first floor was dedicated to eating and drinking while the second floor was for rooms to be rented it was a pretty standard setup except having an attic was a rare commodity for an inn. Flamma unlocked the door and the four adventurers walked in to see that the room was in fact a small private makeshift bedroom with a small desk setup by the window and a small fireplace in between it and the bed. Behind the desk sat a man with larger proportions than most of the other villagers indicating he had some wealth, however the bags under his eyes mixed with his pale complexion made him look almost like a corpse. "I can't see you very well from there come in and light the fire." the man said in a voice that was as rough as gravel. Flamma walked over to the fireplace and conjured a small ball of fire in his hand before tossing it into the already waiting pile of wood and Tinder. the man looked shocked obviously expecting Flamma to use the small jar of oil and the Flint beside the fireplace. This actually eased his tensions a little as he knew this man was now capable of magic and Fire magic specifically. The man looked over the other three and noting the two young women who were clearly foreigners from the Eastern continent judging by their distinct facial features and the katana on Suzuran's hip, but William in his eyes was underwhelming due to the fact he wore no armor and had no weapons except for his shirt being reinforced with leather but it was still not much better than an ordinary shirt when a blade is involved. "You expect me to believe that just the four of you can handle a Necromancer and his horde of Undead." the man said with irritation in his voice. "Why don't you explain the situation and then we'll decide if we can handle it or not." Flamma said handing the bottle of liquor to the man. "I suppose I should introduce myself my name is Lucas Brighton, but you may call me Lord Brighton." Lord Brighton said pulling out a small glass and pouring the liquor into it. It all started six months ago when a group of children went to play by the Mountainside. this wouldn't have been anything unusual however they happen to bring along a young girl who was visiting with her family who are prospectors from the miners Guild and she took one of her parents pickaxes and they were all pretending to be miners. While they were playing they dug into the Mountainside and found mithril a metal as light as leather but stronger than steel. It didn't take long for the miners Guild and Merchants guild to show up and start making offers. After a month all the papers were signed and the mine was officially opened and they quickly started making profits due to the quality of the vein. Two months ago the necromancer made his way to the mine with a small force of Undead and murdered over twenty workers before sending a message saying that he would and give them back the mine after he conducted his ritual. "Why would you wait two months before contacting anyone for help, this man was obviously lying." Suzuran asked a little surprised. "The thought that he was lying did cross our minds however when he started sending crates of mithril down to the Village we felt it was more of a risk to provoke him until..." Lord Brighton said before trailing off and taking a sip of his liquor. "So what happened to change your mind." Flamma asked Even though he already had a suspicion. "Two weeks ago two families went missing but they managed to take out one of the attackers, one of the workers named Marcus who was killed in the initial attack on the mine." he said as he finished his first glass of liquor. "I'm sorry did you know him well." Tsubaki asked seeing lord Brighton's face sink somehow further. "Certainly not as well as his family did." Said Lord Brighton has he refilled his glass. "His wife Anna and daughter Lisa deserve far more sympathy than me." "What did you do with the body." William asked. "I hope you didn't bury it." "No his wife and daughter wants to bury him and give him the proper respects in fact half the town does however the priest and the other half of the town think burying him would bring some kind of curse because of the the dark magic that was used." Lord Brighton said becoming annoyed once again but looked at the four adventurers. "I don't suppose you would have an answer for that something that would at least calm down the people." "No, in truth burying it will let the dark magic sink into the ground and in some cases cause consecrated ground to become defiled ground." Flamma said. "And if that were to happen certain dark rituals and Magics are easier to perform." "Well we can't just leave him in the chapel." Lord Brighton said. "Don't worry, all you need to do is prepare a funeral pyre and I'll light it with magical Flames." Flamma said. "The magical Flames will destroy the dark magic." "That may be a problem, you see the priest wanted to cremate him however Anna forbade it claiming it was some cultural taboo." Lord Brighton said with the annoyance creeping back into his voice. "That makes sense." William said with a sigh. "Judging by their names they're from the Western continent and on the western continent only the worst criminals like rapists and murderers are cremated instead of giving a proper burial as a sign of shame." "We'll deal with that problem later for now just focus on getting rid of the Necromancer." Lord Brighton said getting back to the matter at hand. "I'm prepared to offer you one hundred gold Colts if you can do this." The whole group was surprised as this was a large amount of money. Colts are a common currency that can be traded in most kingdoms on all four continents. copper is the easiest to acquire and is traded in most small Inns and shops along with silver for some higher-end places. Gold was what you would use when going to a restaurant fit for Nobles or buying land or housing. "There's one more thing I'm curious about." William said. "How long has this chill been in the air because normally it would take at least six months for this kind of effect." "It was still somewhat cold at the time but maybe about one month after he arrived." Lord Brighton said "What does it mean?" "Don't know, but we'll see when we get to the mine." William said. The group left Lord Brighton to continue drinking in his room and walked down to talk to the Innkeeper requesting a room for them to rest in for a few hours before going to the mine. He agreed and handed them a small key free of charge, being a reasonable man the Innkeeper wanted to give them every possible advantage. the four walk up to the room, it's large and has four beds and two small desks one on each side of the room clearly one of the more expensive rooms available. "You know it amazes me every time when a client thinks that adventurers travel everywhere in heavy plate armor and chainmail or something." William said taking a seat on one of the beds. "And that all adventurers are big burly men wielding great swords and battle axes." Suzuran said taking a seat opposite of him. "It can't really be helped, adventures were originally meant to investigate new lands or to investigate the forming of a lynchpin." Flamma said handing tsubaki a small smooth Stone. "I need you to carve a rune for me one that can project light and illusions." "Ok an illusion of what, it helps if you're specific." "We need the stone to be able to project the image of a person." "Does it matter who the illusion takes the form of?" "No as long as you can tell it's a humanoid then it'll work." Tsubaki pulled out her tool kit from her bag which contained a chisel and a small hammer as well as numerous brushes and carving tools to ensure that she could carve a rune if the situation called for it. Most mercenaries and adventurers hate magic runes for being simple and predictable. To wizards they are nearly useless because they can use magic without them, However Tsubaki has found more than a few creative uses for them. "So what's the plan when we get to the mine." Suzuran asked taking a seat on one of the beds. "We won't really have a plan until we see the state of the mine." William said taking a seat on his own bed "However necromancer's nine times out of ten follow a pattern we'll fill you in when we get there." The group checked over there equipment and set out for the mine around midnight.
