Unwanted
It was 5am in the morning and Nora woke up to a slap to her back.
“ Ahhhh” screamed Nora. She quickly rolled off the bed and fell to the floor and hit her head . “ Ouch that hurt” she said while rubbing her now sour forehead forgetting about the stinging pain on her back . When she finally felt a bit sober , she lifted her head and saw one of their caretakers Miss Anna staring at her with a murderous glare .
“You witch , do you want to kill me before my time huh? , you know by 4am you should be awake and doing your chores before any of the kids are wake” said Miss Anna “ Now look at the time witch, IT’S 5AM and your still asleep . You made me wake up from my sweet slumber to come and wake your sorry ass up because l did not see the lights of the hallways on nor hear any movements.” she said while walking towards me and grabbing me by my T-shirt.
And then she lowered her head and look at me , “ l bet l look so messed up right now” I thought and boy was l right because she sneered at me and said , “ You really are a witch huh , look at ur hair …… it looks like a bird’s nest at least look decent u i***t , no wonder nobody wants to adopt you.”
“ Now hurry to work and make it fast you have already wasted an hour , you don’t want the kids to wake up and the first thing they see is your ugly face it would ruin their mood and day” she said while dragging me down stairs .
It took us six sets of stairs to reach to the first floor. The orphanage is a three storied building and boy was l tired from all the pushing and dragging .
When we finally arrived to the first floor, Miss Anna used all her strength to push me and l ended up falling on my face.
“ Make sure to be quick witch and when your done , hurry up back to your room and wait till 10am to come and take breakfast because you know nobody wants to see or be near you , they may just end up losing their appetite if they see you in the dining hall do you hear me ?” She said angrily
“Yes Miss Anna” l said sadly and lowered my head and went straight to the utility room to get started with the cleaning.It’s been like this for as long as l could remember, l learnt to harden my heart and numb all the pain but sometimes l can’t help but be depressed and just want to ask why?
When l finally got done with the cleaning and mopping of the windows and floors , it was already 6:30am. So l rushed out and ran straight to church , yes we have a church in the orphanage and it’s the only place where l feel safe and heard plus nobody really talks to me so l spend my time talking to God.
I said a quick prayer and rushed straight back to my room and took a bath. After cleaning up l sat on bed and started reading a novel because by now everyone is awake doing their own things and getting ready to go to the dinning hall.
“Why did no one ever want to adopt me” l thought “Am l really that unlucky” l sighed .
“ Well the good thing is l just need to endure this humiliation for one more year, when am 18 next year , they would finally let me go and l can finally be free and away from this garbage of a orphanage.”
“Ahh l can’t wait” I exhaled and fell back to my bed. Then suddenly l had a lot of murmuring outside and l leaned over my small window and saw majority of the kids in the compound almost surrounding a car. And next to the car stood Miss Anna with a huge smile on her face shaking hands with a not so old looking man . He looked in his mid 30s , and next to him was a good- looking boy, he didn’t look so old, maybe a few years older than me. He had a sharp jaw line and he looked breathing taking. “Is he a new kid” I mumbled to myself.
I could see all the girls blushing just looking at him, l mean l don’t blame them he really is handsome. But he looked so cold and distant . “Ehh so intimidating” I thought. All of a sudden he starts moving towards the building while the man that was with him was busy shouting at him. “Damien you ungrateful kid, show some face to your father am still talking to you come back here. Damien ” But he just kept walking not minding his father at all. “ Hmm that’s his father?”I thought in confusion. “ Then if the boy is not an orphan why is his own father dropping him off at an orphanage.”
Little did l know that this boy would change my life for the worst.
