Chapter One
Lexie Davidson watched the hands of the clock on her wristwatch, as they ticked by, bringing her to what would soon be her new reality. It was an expensive vintage wristwatch her father had given to her a few moments before he passed away and was the only thing she had left from him, that wasn't taken away from her by her stepfather. The fact that her mother had not wasted any time before she was with a new man was something Lexie found a little bit hard to understand, even at the present age of twenty-six. One week. One week was all it had taken Elizabeth to get married with a wedding gown that was way bigger than the one she had worn on her wedding day with Lexie's father. And a veil too. She, Lexie, had been forced to play the part of the chief bride's maid and had been forced to smile as of she was enjoying the whole show. All that had been ten years ago. And it had taken her new stepfather just one week to show his true colors. Ten whole years of physical and emotional abuse. She had been turned into a puppet, playing both the role of a daughter, and a maid. Getting married to her mother had automatically made him the acting Alpha, until she met her mate, and got married. But her stepfather had made sure it didn’t happen, keeping her under his watch 24/7. Gerald immediately fired the cook and asked that she cook all the meals in the house. It wouldn't have been much of a hassle if she hadn't been required to cook at least ten different meals everyday, in small portions for Gerald, which would sometimes go to waste. And then, he and her mother occupied different rooms. She was required to clean his own personally, three times a day. And when he was present. Something that was going to hunt Lexie for the next ten years, and probably the rest of her life. The train rolled to a stop, blaring it’s horns, and Lexie was jolted out of her thoughts by the announcement that she had reached her stop. She felt her wolf nudge her a bit, seemingly alert. A quick look around, and a quick wipe of her damp face, and she was rushing out of the train, and into the crowd of people waiting to get on the train. Seattle. It was the only city that had come to her mind when she had thought of her brilliant escape plan. And boy was it exactly as she envisioned because it was busy as f**k. New York had been her first, but she had known that her stepfather wasn't going to waste any time looking for her there. Gerald's obsession with her was disgusting and appalling. And was something her dear mother had turned a blind eye to, despite knowing about it. A taxi headed her way, and she flayed her arms to get his attention, smiling when the driver pulled to a stop just in front of her. "Where to, ma'am?" The old man with very kind eyes asked, poking his head through the car window. She could tell he was human as there was no scent around him. Lexie rattled her address to him, and he waved her in, unlocking the car door for her to enter. Once she was inside, she pulled her very huge backpack onto her lap and sighed in relief as the car drove off to her destination. With the small amount of money she had saved, she has been able to get a small apartment and paid for six months, which was a lot. Next was the advertisement for a job at a restaurant she had seen online. The plan was to get as much sleep as she could, and then, go there first thing the next morning. On instinct and out of habit, Lexie reached for her phone in her pocket but was disappointed when she didn't find it there. It took her a few seconds to remember that that was one thing she had decided to leave in the mansion, which was also the pack house. She had decided to leave and also cut ties with them, completely. She had sworn to herself, that she wasn't going to just sit, and serve her stepfather for the rest of her life, and constantly be trampled upon. She wasn’t interested in being the Luna of a pack that had turned a blind eye to what her stepfather had been doing to her. Which was what led her to take the drastic decision to leave. And as the minutes flew by, she didn't feel even one pang of regret. "Here we are, ma'am." The man said, looking at her through the mirror. Lexie nodded and rummaged through her small purse which she had placed on her backpack, for change. "Here, thank you." She said politely and made to leave the car. But the man's words stopped her. "Those eyes are too sad for a young woman like you." He started, looking out the window, but talking to her. "Trust me, with hard work and determination, it would only get better. Try not to wallow in sadness, you would only get sadder and sadder. And you, my dear, look like you have the determination and will. Use it." He reached for the glove compartment and retrieved a white handkerchief and passed it to Lexie. "Now smile my dear, no one enters this taxi and leaves with a face like that." He said with a smile. The smile kind of lit up his face a little, with his eyes crinkling. Lexie smiled genuinely, as his words had been both surprising and touching. She took the handkerchief and wiped the tears that had fallen on their own, before saying thank you to the man and leaving the taxi. She watched as the car drove off, knowing very well, that she was not going to forget that ride anytime soon, or the words that had been said to her by the driver. She sniffed, trying to compose herself, as she looked at the tall huge building in front of her. It looked the same way as it had looked on the website. Old, but still in good condition, making her breathe a sigh of relief. It wasn't unusual to rent a house online and come over to see something different from what was advertised. And the fact that this looked exactly like she had seen it, gave her some sort of comfort. "Are you going to keep standing there, or are you going to come in already? I don't have all evening Miss Davidson." A voice called, startling her as she looked towards where the voice had come from. It was the landlord, and judging by his impatient expression and stance, she could tell he had been standing there the whole time. She recognized him because they had spoken on a video call, where he had shown her the apartment. As nice as he was, she had known right away, that he wasn't very patient. Which was now cemented by the look of irritation he was now giving her as he ushered her inside the building. As Lexie passed him, she could tell, just like the taxi driver, that her landlord was human. And boy was she glad. "Here are your keys, Miss Davidson. If you want, you can change the locks, but that would be on you." He said pushing open the door and handing the keys over to Lexie. "I have had the house cleaned thoroughly, and my wife decided it would be nice to give you a few groceries for you to prepare dinner this evening, which I don't exactly understand why, but there you have it." He said, smiling. Lexie raised her eyes in surprise at their kind gesture and made a mental note to do something in return. "Thank you so much." She said, peeking into the very neat apartment. "And please extend my greetings to your wife." After that, he gave her a quick rundown of how things worked, before asking her to call him if she needed anything. Despite his impatience, he was quite sweet, which made Lexie suddenly want to meet his wife. Sure enough, the groceries were there, but the lack of appetite on her part, made her stock them in the fridge, deciding to leave them for breakfast instead. It was almost six in the evening, and she was certainly drained of all her energy. With sleep being the next best thing, Lexie headed into the bathroom for a very long and relaxing shower. Gosh, it had been so long since she had a shower and stayed for more than five minutes. Neither her stepfather nor mother would have allowed it. Both would have insisted that there were other ways she could be spending her precious time, instead of wasting it in the shower. And by spending it, they always meant work. Hah! Her precious time. Now she had it all to herself, and under her control. When she was done, she lay on the bed with just one thought on her mind, which was finding a job at the restaurant she had seen online. Tomorrow was going to be a long day, and she couldn't wait. For now, as her eyes closed, she couldn't help but smile as she knew she was finally free. And hoped it was going to stay that way forever. But there was the fact that she needed to find a new pack as soon as possible to join, so she could finally cut off the link to her old pack. For now though, all she had to do, was bury her dear wolf inside of her and not make the mistake of shifting, else her stepfather, Gerald, was going to find her before her feet touched the floor.
