Initially, she had decided to choose Ethel because she was sure he was the one for her. Ethel initiated a brawling contest in which the winner was to take her home. Declan won the fight effortlessly much to her dismay. During her stay with Declan, she discovered that Declan had only wanted her because her presence in his life would increase his powers. When she discovered that Declan had the same tattoo as her parents' killer, she decided to investigate. Chapter 1
CHAPTER ONE Raina's POV I stared at the moon as I wrapped my hand around myself. This was the night that everything was going to change. I know it. I can feel it in my bones. It was not only going to be my first shift, it was going to be my destiny changing night. I stared at my cousin who stood beside me. I stared down at my dress then hers. I looked like her house help standing beside her which technically, I was. She smiled at me and I forced a smile. We had never been close even though we were in the same age group. She always thought she was better than me. What's more? We wanted the same mate. I was sure that the moon goddess was not going to give her the mate we wanted. She can't have a perfect life and I keep living like a pig. I was going to end up with Alpha Ethel, not her. I performed a little breathing exercise then I stepped away from my cousin. She was going to continuously overshadow me if I remained in that position. The place suddenly went quiet and the hairs at the back of my neck stood. I raised my head to see him. I couldn't help but smile. It was also going to be his first shift. I hoped we would find each other. The rule was that once we had our first shift, the scent which our wolf recognised and was drawn to was ours. In other words, the wolf we found was our mate. And tonight, I hope that he finds me. We will make a perfect pair. He was going to be the Alpha. Everyone knows that. He would be crowned Alpha after tonight alongside his Luna which would be me. I have always had a crush on him right from middle school even though he never noticed me. Mostly because I was an omega. There was nothing special about being an omega but it is all going to change tonight when he finds me and announces me as his Luna. I was going to be promoted from the Omega rank to Luna rank. I squeaked as I thought of it and the people around me turned to look at me. I gave them an apologetic look and cleared my throat trying to focus on what he was saying while trying hard not to drown in his voice. “Tonight is the full moon and we all know the significance of a full moon to people of our kind. Tonight, we are going to welcome some of the members of our pack fully into the pack including myself…” The rest of his words were blurred out as I was lost in his green eyes. Those were the eyes that I would spend my whole night on. “What is she doing here?” “Did she honestly think that she is going to be one of us after tonight?” I didn't need to turn around to face them to know that I was the one they were referring to. I tried to ignore them. It wouldn't matter in a couple of hours. “Scratch that. Did she think that any of the males in this pack would be tied to her? Nobody wants a lowly omega as their mate.” “Yes. She is just being delusional.” I cleared my throat and smiled. They were not going to get to me tonight. It was almost time. I closed my eyes deeply and prayed one last time to the moon goddess even though she had never considered any of my prayers. I had a feeling that tonight was going to be an exception. It had to be. We moved deeper into the woods. Many were going hand in hand with their friends. I was the only one who had no one to hold hands with. I turned to see my cousin talking to a couple of people. As usual, she is the center of attention. A thought crossed my mind. What if she was going to be Luna? She had charisma. I blinked my eyes and casted the thought away. I am going to be Luna and there is no one in between. I've used ten years to prepare my first speech to my pack as their Luna. She was not going to take that away from me. It is the only hope I have left. I sighed and continued walking. I stopped in front of a tree. There was no one in sight. I peeled off my clothes. In a few minutes, I was standing stark naked under the full moon as I awaited my first shift. It was going to be epic. It had to be. The moon was at its brightest. It could happen any moment from now. I could hear wolves howling and a round of applause following. Someone had found their mate. What if it was Alpha Ethel. I shook my head. Positive vibes only. I stayed for what seemed like an hour to me. Nothing was happening. It sounded as though everyone had found their mate. Alpha Ethel could be one of them. I opened my eyes in disappointment. Tears blinding my vision. Once again, the moon goddess did not accept my prayer. What was I expecting? There was no way that an Alpha could be mated to an omega. It had never happened. Too bad, I wanted to be the first. I picked up my pants in tears knowing that my cousin was going to shove her mate to my face. I would die if the moon goddess answered her prayer. I heard the bone crack. I stopped for a moment trying to decipher what was going on when the second bone cracked. It was finally happening. My first shift was finally happening. I wanted to scream but the third bone cracking shut me up. It was painful. I was forced on my knees. I could feel my leg bones reshaping. The snapping of my feet had me screaming out loud. I could feel that my feets were gone but I couldn't look down. I was scared that I would pass out if I did. My hands did the same thing and I screamed again. My neck twisted and my back shot up. I could only close my eyes and scream. The pain was unbearable. After some minutes, the pain stopped and I felt different. I walked to a pool which shined bright under the moon. I admired my white fur. I did it. At least, I can shift. I was going to die of embarrassment if I couldn't. I decided to go back to the pack, losing every will of finding my mate. I started moving when a beautiful scent filled my nostrils and stopped me from moving further. It smelt like the woods after a heavy downpour mixed with cinnamon. I couldn't help but inhale the scent deeply. I was drunk in it. I felt drawn to it. I started walking towards it then I started running. I ran, leaped and jumped all the way. My mind, clouded with the scent. I knew I wasn't going to let go of it. I didn't want to. I stopped in front of a giant gray wolf. It was a lot bigger than mine and it looked fierce. 'Mate' I purred. I never thought I could say that word. I stood and stared at him, watching his actions. He stepped back and my heart fell. I knew he was going to reject me. All this was for nothing. I wasn't going to witness him reject me. My small heart will crumble if I do. I turned to go when something jumped on me. I couldn't shake it off. He was all over me. I tried to fight back but he was stronger than me. He used his large furry hair to nuzzle my neck. I purred and closed my eyes in anticipation. “Mate.” He said and I opened my eyes. My heart stopped beating as I stared into his eyes. Those green eyes. I will forever get lost in the intensity of his eyes. He rolled over me. He rubbed my fur and I kept purring in satisfaction. He stepped away from me and stared at me. I tried not to look below his waist. “Shift back.” He said. I closed my eyes as I shifted. It wasn't painful. It felt natural. I could feel my hands and feets again. I opened my eyes to see him staring at me with intensity. His face was unreadable. I closed my eyes as I waited for him to reject me. They were right. No Alpha would want an Omega by their side. “Mine.” I opened my eyes slowly to see him staring hard at me. The smile on his face. He kept staring. It took me a minute to realize that I was on full display. My hands tried to wrap myself immediately and he chuckled. I was more than embarrassed. He picked up a dress. “Is this yours?” I nodded frantically and grabbed the dress from him. He chuckled again. He was still watching. “Can you please turn around?” I said slowly and he smiled. “Yes, of course. But, you have to get used to it eventually.” My wolf purred at that. He kept staring until I cleared my throat. He raised his hands and turned around. I tried not to check his backside out. I cleared my throat. “Uhm. You should to put something on too.” We walked hand in hand back to the pack when we finished dressing. I could feel them. We were close to them. I stopped and slipped my hand from his. He turned to stare at me in confusion. “Go on. I will follow suit.” I urged but he shook his head and brought his hand forward. “We will go in together.” But I shook my head. “They won't approve. I don't want to be embarrassed.” He growled. It took me almost a minute to realize that he wasn't growling at me. “They wouldn't dare. You are mine.” He said and drew me to him. I didn't want to walk hand in hand with him but I ended up walking in with his hand on my waist. The crowd gasped as we walked in together. “Meet my mate and your future Luna, Raina.” I turned to look at him. He knew my name. I thought I was a nobody to him. I loved the way my name rolled off his lips. It was as if he tasted it rather than called it. “Alpha…” He placed his finger on my lips. “It's just Ethel to you.” I smiled through my watery eyes as I stared at the shocked crowd. The look on their faces was to die for. My cousin stared at me in tears. There was no one beside her. For the first time in our lives, she wanted something that I had.
