The Bounty Hunter
LEXI POV The man lunged at me, shifting midair. I sidestepped and crouched, twisting and he crashed into the bookcase behind me. I could hear my bodyguard shouting in alarm from the floor below me. This would be all over by the time he made it up one flight of stairs. The wolf stood up and I flicked my wrist, pulling the bookcase from behind him down on top of him. He never saw it coming. They never do. I’m a hybrid, part fairy and part werewolf. One of my special gifts is telekinesis. That means I can move things just by thinking about it. My bodyguard burst through the door but I was already slapping silver cuffs on the man who had shifted back when he was knocked unconscious. “Where you been, Hagrid?” I was cocky. I usually was. Hagrid wasn’t really his name. I think it was something Scottish, Sean or something. He was part giant, strong as an ox but not very graceful and definitely not the smartest. I started calling him Hagrid the first job I took him on and it stuck. Most people now called him Hagrid, even the humans. They couldn’t see past the Glamour so he just looked like a larger than average man. To those of us supernaturals, we could see him for what he was and Hagrid fit, for obvious reasons. My name is Alexandra. I go by Lexi for short. My dad is werewolf and my mum was a fairy. I am not sure if she’s still alive or not. She skipped out on us shortly after I was born and my dad raised me in the family business. The family business is bounty hunting. I’ve hunted a few humans but most of the time I’m hunting supernaturals. I’m hired by different governing bodies around the US to track down and bring in supernaturals who have been very, very bad and who have disappeared. Today’s catch was Ronan Gonzales. He’s a rogue werewolf wanted for exposing himself to humans and terrorizing a human family. He wasn’t too hard to grab. Hagrid dropped me off at the office and continued on downtown to the Center where he would turn over Ronan to the officers on duty. They would get him where he needed to go and we would get paid. I walked through the revolving door into the foyer and waved at the security guard. Our suite of offices was on the third floor, so I took the stairs instead of waiting for the elevator. My trainers were silent on the stairs and I bounded up them without stopping. “Hey dad!” I let myself into the front office and saw that the secretary had already gone home. Jody was a good worker, and a vampire, but she had a wild streak that started at 9pm sharp. This meant she was gone by five so that she could get herself home and dolled up. She would usually roll into the office around 10am which drove me nuts but Dad put up with her because she knew her s**t and kept us organized. “Hey kiddo! Heard you got him.” I walked around the wall separating the front office from our desks in the back, bracing myself for what I was going to see. It has been two years but it still surprises me when I see it. My dad was handsome, young looking for his age, but one side of his face was shredded in a tangled mass of scars, nerves and sinue. He almost died on one of our jobs and I almost died trying to save him. We had always had a weird relationship. When mom left, he did his best to be both a mom and a dad to me but he didn’t really have it in him so he did what he knew. And he knew how to be a good bounty hunter. He trained me from the moment I started walking. He spent hours with me, trying to figure out what sort of gifts I inherited from mom and working with me on perfecting them. At twenty-two, I was an incredible fighter with an ability to fight all sort of supernatural beings. We discovered I had the power of telekinesis and that became part of my training. I am also able to heal others as well as myself, though that one takes a lot of energy out of me. I have to be careful or that one will kill me. Unlike a lot of wolves, I have an affinity to water. My mom was a water spirit. I also inherited some of her weaknesses. I’m a little bit OCD with numbers and things have to be symmetrical around me or it drives me to insanity. Dad said mom would sit and count beans to make sure each plate had the same amount before she would serve him dinner. I also have a weakness towards iron. Silver is obvious because I’m part wolf but we would have never guessed iron until until two years ago when I was ambushed. After that job dad insisted that I have a bodyguard go with me. “Yeah, we got him. He was pretty easy. Hagrid is taking him in right now.” Dad nodded at me. His whole right side was messed up and he wasn’t able to go out on jobs anymore. He now ran the office part, digging through and deciding which jobs we were going to take and which ones we’d pass on. He had intended on retiring and leaving me in charge of the business, but he had thought we’d be working together in the field for a lot longer than we were able to. “Went through a new batch. Some of them aren’t local enough and not lucrative enough so I’m sending them on to some of my buddies. There’s a few I’m going to give to Bear that involve a little bit of travel. There’s some local ones you can work on but there’s one in particular I want you to focus on.” I nodded, reaching for the file he was holding. “Did you give Bear his jobs yet? If you didn’t tell him you wanted him to work on something he will be out at the bars all night. He’ll be hung over tomorrow and won’t be ready to travel.” Dad shrugged. “It’s his life. I have no say in what he does when he’s off the clock.” That was the difference between dad and me. As long as the job got done, he was cool. I liked finesse. And it pissed me off when people just half ass something to get it done. “Whatever.” I was quiet, reading the file. “This one is pretty interesting.” The file was on a twenty-nine-year-old werewolf who was accused of murdering his mate and her family. Her family was a family of diplomats somewhere in Europe, and were visiting their daughter and her mate here in the US, when the murder took place. The European Pack is demanding that this man be turned over to them for punishment but he had disappeared, claiming he was innocent. I turned over the page to read the information that Jody had found on the man. His name was Kevin Wagner. He was the Beta of the Riverstone Valley Pack. His father was the Beta prior to him for the previous Alpha. The current Alpha had asked Kevin to be his Beta shortly after taking over when his father died. I looked at the photographs Jody had gotten from social media. Kevin seemed like a pretty chill dude. He had longer hair and a goatee that he kept pretty trim. He had a half smile that made him look like he knew a secret about the person taking the photograph. It was kind of endearing. There were photographs of him and his mate. In all of the photos, he had a different look when he was with her. It was like his edge was gone. He looked calmer, happier. I couldn’t believe he killed her and her family in a drunken rage like the report stated. I knew that drinking could change someone’s personality, but in my experience there’s always signs beforehand. I would have to talk to some of the people that knew Kevin. I went through the photos again. Jody was really thorough and she had provided a huge stack. I noticed that some of the photos were of him at one of the local bars in town that was big with the supernatural crowd. It was owned by a fairy, a Leprechaun to be specific, who used Glamour to hide it from the humans. From the outside it looked like a seedy, run down dump but inside it was quite trendy with lots of local and international talent taking the stage. I’ve been there a few times but bars aren’t really my scene. I’m part fairy and don’t hold my liquor very well. It looks like I’m heading there tonight, though. I texted Hagrid to pick me up at the office and I would fill him in. I plopped the file on my desk and headed into the back room where I kept different outfits I used for work. The chance of me getting lucky and finding Kevin Wagner tonight on my first night of looking was slim to none but I’ve gotten lucky before. And Wagner’s bounty was pretty huge. I could take a nice vacation to a secluded beach with the bonus I would get from this one. I went through the racks of clothes, picking out a short, slinky, skintight red sheath dress that was low cut in front. The material was shiny but super stretchy and would allow me to move in it if I needed to. I put on special garters up high on my thigh, adding in two small silver daggers. If I was patted down I would have some serious explaining to do but I’m rarely patted down. I would take my chances. I piled my long brown hair on top of my head and jabbed a bunch of bobby pins into it so that the curls wouldn’t come down and get in my face. I put my silver cuffs into a teeny tiny purse and slid my feet into comfortable black flats. The dress really needed heels to complete the effect but I’m six feet tall and running in heels is hell so flats it was. I walked out of the back room and blew a kiss at my dad. “Gonna head over to Golden’s Club. Just going to ask around. I’ll see you tomorrow morning, love!” “Be careful. Make sure Hagrid keeps his eyes open.” “Don’t worry. I’ll keep Hagrid safe.” I snorted at the look on his face and walked down the stairs, sliding into the car that was double parked in front of the office despite the security guard standing right there. That was Hagrid for you. Didn’t give a s**t about nothing.
