Chapter 1 Different
“No! Please stop! Don’t hurt them!” I screamed. “Lauren run. Go with Jake now!” My father ordered me away. As he said those words I felt myself being lifted into someones arm. I screamed and kicked. “Put me down Jake! We need to go back! We need to help them!” I kicked as hard as I could but to no avail. Jake was running as fast as he could in the opposite direction, I stopped struggling in the end. I mean how could I, a 6 year old get free from my dads gammas hold. He was a grown man. He was doing what my dad had ordered him to do, even if that meant leaving the fight. “I need to get you safe Lauren, your parents told me to get you out of there!” Jake told me through the mind link. Something in me knew what he said was true, but it did not stop the tears from erupting and falling. I buried my head into his shoulder as he ran. We must have ran for what seemed like forever until I fell asleep from exhaustion. “Lauren. Lauren I need you to wake up.” Jake said to me as he woke me up, he was talking a little above a whisper. I started to reel through the events that occurred before I went to sleep. I started to panic and look around our surroundings, praying it was all a bad dream. I looked back to Jakes face, tears already starting to fall, I knew it was not a dream. I saw the cuts and blood on Jakes face. He looked older than he actually was. It was not a dream, it really happened. I began to sob again I couldn’t help it, I felt so alone, so scared, what caused the attack on my pack? Why did they come after my family? We never hurt anyone. “Lauren I need you to listen to me! You need to stop crying and listen. I know it’s hard but try to focus on my voice.” Jake pleaded with me. I couldn’t stop the silent sobbing but I looked up to his crystal blue eyes and tried to listen to him. “Right, we have left the pack grounds and are crossed over into another territory. If we are discovered your name is Lauren Briggs, do you understand? Your name is no longer Lauren Newton, you are an omega pup that managed to flee the attack. No one can ever know about who you really are, it is not safe. Do I make myself clear” I didn’t understand why we were going to lie but as I was a child and Jake was a gamma I was compelled to do as he asked. I didn’t really have much choice in the matter. “I understand” I said through sobs. “Good girl, it’s the only way to keep you safe, sweetheart.” Jake said to me with sincerity in his voice. He picked me up and began to carry me through the dark woodland we were travelling through. I snuggled myself into his arms as much as I possibly could. I felt safe with Jake. I woke up with sweat beads formed on my forehead. My breathing was laboured and saliva was caught in my throat, I choked on it and gasped for air. After a few moments of gasping I was able to breathe normal again. “Are you ok Lauren?” The voice was in my head. “Your not supposed to choke on spit, ya know!” Her voice was laced with giggles. “I am glad you find it funny, Star!” I replied with sarcasm to my wolf. She was always finding the funny side of any situation. I am only 15 but my 16th birthday is in two weeks. Most werewolves don’t acquire the whole counterparts until they turn 16 but Star came to me early. She helped me through the loss of Jake a few years ago. He was the last family I knew. We were taken in by a neighbouring pack after the attack, but we both hid our identities. Jake said it was the only way to keep me safe. The blood moon pack were not nasty in anyway but we still need to hide where we came from. That way we could remain hidden. “Well I wasn’t going to let you suffer alone Lauren. You needed me and the moon goddess told me to come to you, and help you.” She said. She actually ment that. Most of the time Star likes to find jokes and humour in everything. It helps me most of the time, stops my life being so dark and gloomy. “I know Star. You have told me before and I am glad you came, I can’t imagine life without you now.” I replied. I rolled over and looked towards the alarm clock on my bedside unit. 4:06am. I rolled back onto my back, I didn’t see the point in going back to sleep, I would have to get up anyway at 5am to start my chores. I stared at the ceiling for a moment and gathered my thoughts it was the same nightmare. The same awful moment replaying over every night for weeks now. Always ending at the same spot, the same damn spot every time. I swung my legs from under the blanket and got out of my bed. I needed to take a shower and clear my thoughts. I grabbed a few bits from my wardrobe to wear for the day; grey leggings and a pale blue T-shirt, neutral coloured sports bra and pants. I got my shoes and socks as well as my towel and headed out my dorm room, turned down the corridor and headed towards the showers. I lived on the omega floor so we didn’t have on-suite bathrooms we had a communal bathroom with showers fitted. I walked quietly until I got to the door and pushed my way through. No one is normally up at this time so I could take a peaceful shower and collect my thoughts. I turned the knob to as hot as I could possibly take, and laid my clothes on the side. They would be fine there while I showered. There were bars of soap already in the cubicle, provided by the alpha and luna of this pack. They were not that bad to the Omegas here. There were worse packs out there. Trust me. Sometimes they would even give us all actual shampoo and stuff as opposed to the soap bars, but normally only when big events were coming up. They’re actually throwing a big party on my birthday, it’s not for me, but at least I’ll get a glimpse whilst working it.. The Alphas son would be returning from training camp. “Alpha school, you mean!” Star said with a hint of discuss. “Alright Alpha School” I replied sarcastically. I know why she hated it. We should have been there as well, I was Alpha by blood, I should have been in training too. Typically the males of the family take the Alpha position but my parents never got chance to have another child before the pack was attacked. “You know we can’t tell anyone who we really are Star. Not yet anyway.” I told her. Hoping to cheer her up a little, she hated the fact we hide who we are, we were born to run a pack not be ordered about. She curled herself up in the back of my mind and closed her eyes she always had a way of of blocking me out. I stepped into the shower after undressing myself and allowed the hot water to run down my body, it helped to revitalise me and gave me sense of peace. I could stay here for hours but had to get moving if I was to get my chores done on time. I grabbed the soap and began to wash myself, finishing off with my hair. Once I was clean I turned the knob to the off position and stepped out of the shower, being careful not to slip on the dark tiled floor. I dried myself off as fast as I could and quickly got dressed, it gets cold in this bathroom. I wrapped my hair into the towel, I would dry it some more when I got back to my room. I picked up my dirty clothes from the night before and walked back to my room trying to stay as quiet as when I left. As I got back to my bedroom door I smelt the oddest scent. It was sweet but also a fresh smell. Even Star got all perked up in my head. I looked around to see if I could notice where the scent was coming from but could see nothing. The corridor was dark and empty. I opened my door to my room and entered carefully. The scent had put me on edge a little. It was a feeling I had never had before but at the same time it made me feel safe. Even just a little bit. I shrugged it off and closed my door behind me. I put my laundry in the bag and placed it near the door. I would take it to wash later after breakfast.
