When Ashley Simmons needs some extra money to afford her studies after her mother’s and stepfather’s death leaves her with debts, she applies for employment as a student assistant in a small town. When she is offered the position she agrees immediately. The town is more than perfect with its familiar and homey feeling. There is only one thing that’s rubbing her wrong, the mayor. Mr. Colton Bleckbourne may have godly looks, but his personality is far from it. From the start he is controlling, demanding and overly invested in Ashley’s leisure time.

How is Ashley supposed to live her life when Mr. Bleckbourne wants to control where she sits at mealtimes and takes up her free time with his presence. Why does he get angry with her for every little thing that is not his business to begin with? Why does she hear animals growling on the fifth floor of the pack house? What is it that everyone in the little town seems to know that she doesn’t?

And why does her body react like it does whenever he’s around? She doesn’t even like the man!

Chapter 1
Ashley I hitch my bag up higher on my shoulder and slam the door of my beaten up car shut behind me as I gaze upon the two story brick building in awe. The building looks old, maybe the late nineteenth century but well preserved, and it is beautiful. The bricks are dark brown with white bricks thrown in to make a beautiful pattern and to accent the corners and windows. Above the entrance is a large marble sign with ‘Silver Lake’ carved into it. They don’t make buildings like this nowadays. And it’s obvious the architect thought of every detail when this building was designed. I really hope the inside is just as fascinating as the outside! With a smile on my face I make my way towards the grand staircase leading up to the large double doors. Halfway there the doors open and a man steps through. His handsome looks are just as timeless as this building, and seeing them together really enhances the beauty of them both. His black hair is stylishly fixed into a modern but at the same time timeless style with short on the sides and longer at the top. Tanned and flawless skin that stretches over a straight nose, high cheekbones and a strong square jaw, covered in dark and neatly trimmed scruff. He is dressed in a pair of black slacks and a white button up that does nothing to hide the fit and muscled body beneath. But it is his eyes that enchants me the most and when they land on me his steps falter to a stop and I do the same. They are the most blue eyes I have ever seen and look almost luminescent as they travel down my body. A shiver of excitement raises the hair on my arms and neck when his eyes show appreciation of what they see. “Good day, miss. Are you here for the interview?” His voice is as deep as the ocean and smooth like old whiskey. Or as I imagen whiskey to be from descriptions of others, I have never tried it myself. Never had the wish to do so, but his voice ignites a small curiosity to investigate the saying. He clears his throat and raises a thick dark eyebrow at me in amused questioning and I realize I have taken an embarrassingly long time to answer. “Um, yeah. Yes I am.” I stutter and feel my cheeks burn in embarrassment. I clear my throat as I resume my ascending of the stairs, closer and closer to where this god of a man is standing. “Are you one of the faculty?” He smiles broadly, showing off a row of straight white teeth and I swear my heart stops for a second. “No. I am the alph, eh, I mean the, eh, mayor of this town.” His little stumble of words is the only thing that shows that he is as human as me despite his perfect form. It makes me grin back at him. He chuckles lightly while giving me a sheepish smile. “I have just been here on a visit. I make sure to visit the school in town on a regular basis to form good relationships with the children and youths.” Oh heavens! Now I’m practically swooning over this delicious and gorgeous and obviously caring man! “That’s nice.” I manage to breathe out. “Would you like me to show you to the principal's office?” He turns halfway and opens the door to the school. “That would be very nice of you, thanks. My name is Ashley by the way. Ashley Simmons.” I reach out my hand in greeting and he clasps it in his very large, protective and engulfing hand. Another shiver works its way from my hand and down my spine all the way to my toes and I am positive that my eyes roll back in their sockets. If he notices it he does a good job at hiding the fact. “Colton Bleckbourne, mayor of this beautiful town.” His hold on my hand stays for a moment too long, but it’s not as if I’m complaining or doing anything to break free. His touch is very G rated, but feels much more like a definite NC-17 inside my body. When he finally lets go, my hand feels cold and my chest hollow. I cradle my hand against my chest with my other hand while glancing down at his. “Ladies first.” I snap my eyes up to meet his and the smug smile on his lips. He’s very obvious of my reaction to him and is highly amused by it. Irritation rolls in like thunderclouds and has me dropping my hand and my smile turns to a more forced polite version than the honestly sweet I had before. He knows how he affected me and is pleased about it. He’s just like any other good looking man out there! And to think I actually thought he was sweet and caring. I wonder if his sheepishness earlier was only an act too. “Thank you.” As I step inside the building I am again blown away by the architecture and beauty of the building. My irritation leaves me as I take in the large open foyer with a grand stone staircase leading up to the second floor. At the top are a set of open double doors with a sign above saying ‘Reception’. It doesn’t look like I will have the need for a guide to find the principal’s office. But before I can excuse me Mr. Bleckbourne starts to speak. “This building was built in 1853 and in the beginning it was the town hall. As the town slowly grew we needed more space so 1956 we converted this building into a school. In 2004 we built a new High school a bit outside the town together with two other growing towns. Since then it has been purely an elementary school.” He places a hand on the small of my back as he leads me towards the stairs while explaining the history of this magnificent building. That same feeling of warmth, safety and electric arousal races through my body, just as it did when we shook hands. Even though the feeling is more than pleasant, it feels wrong and strange to experience it with this stranger. When I try to take a step to the side to widen the gap between us his hand quickly moves to my waist to keep me at a too close proximity for strangers. “I love when old buildings are preserved and used for new purposes. Old buildings with a rich history and prudent architecture are too beautiful to be torn down and replaced by modern buildings.” I speak and am very pleased with how strong and clear my voice is, despite me feeling like a shivering leaf. When we reach the reception he finally lets me step away from him. I take a deep breath and release it with a relieved sigh. “Mrs. Tilly.” With a radiant smile the middle aged lady behind the desk shifts her eyes between me and Mr. Bleckbourne. “Yes, Mr. Bleckbourne. Was there something you forgot?” Mr. Bleckbourne chuckles before he turns his eyes to me. “No. I was just showing Miss Simmons here the way to the principal’s office.” Mrs. Tilly turns her smiling face towards me. “Ah. Miss Simmons. Right on time. Welcome to Silver Lake elementary.” “Thank you, Mrs. Tilly.” Mrs. Tilly rounds the desk and walks to the door with a sign beside it saying ‘Principal Banks’. She knocks once before opening the door. “Principal Banks. Miss Simmons is here for her interview.” She then opens the door wider and motions for me to enter. I turn to Mr. Bleckbourne and find him staring intensely at me and I feel my cheeks heat. “Thank you for your help.” I make sure to keep my hands clasped hard together in front of me praying that he will understand and not wish to shake my hand again. But after his eyes have flitted down quickly to my hands, his lips turn into a mischievous lopsided smirk. “You’re welcome, Miss Simmons.” He extends his hand for me to take. I glare at his hand and I curse inside my head. The satisfied smirk at my obvious distress has me clenching my jaw in irritation. It is obvious that he’s doing this just because I’m feeling uncomfortable. When my hand lands in his, the same feeling of pleasure rushes through me and I feel flushed and flustered. Mr. Bleckbourne on the other hand looks perfectly at ease and completely unaffected. That small show of fluster he had outside when we met must have been an act! “Good luck with your interview.” His voice has lowered a few octaves and he leans in towards me slightly as he speaks. My breath hitches from the sensory overload of the weight of his eyes, musk of his scent, warmth of hand and his deep voice. When I try to pull my hand back only seconds after placing it in his, he tightens his grip and holds on for a few seconds more before finally releasing me. The last thing I see before I turn away from him is the pleased and smug smirk gracing his too perfect lips. I fight to keep the frustrated groan begging to escape my chest inside and instead focus on my present mission, acing this interview! *** What do you think of the first chapter? Mr. Bleckbourne seems to enjoy making poor little Ashley suffer from his godly attractiveness. And I wonder what was on his mind when he even pulled her closer while showing her the way to Principal Banks office. Especially since the way wasn’t especially hard to find to begin with.
