Chapter 1 - Becoming a Sorcerer
"If you kneel down and prostrate yourself before me, I might consider returning you the money," said the man seated on the couch in the pub as he put an arm around Sasha Sadler, my ex-girlfriend. Hearing these words made me so furious that my entire body started trembling from the sheer humiliation. Kneeling before such a hateful man hurt my pride, but I needed the money to treat my mother's illness.  I came from a single-parent household, with my mother being the one to raise me entirely on her own. She had worked so hard to put me through school, and I had just graduated from university this year. But before I could earn money to repay her, she fell ill. She was suffering from kidney failure and needed a transplant. The hospital had found a suitable donor, but it was estimated to cost us more than 60 thousand dollars. I did not have that kind of money. I went around trying to borrow money from anybody I could find, but once those so-called relatives of mine heard I had come to borrow money from them, they chased me away before I could even set foot inside their homes. Sasha was my girlfriend when we were in university. I had saved up several thousand dollars from working part-time and put everything into her bank account. But after getting together with David Jenkins, the son of a tycoon, she broke up with me, and now, I was here before them to ask for my money back. After struggling for a bit to make a decision, I finally fell to my knees. Once my knees hit the floor, David's equally awful friends started mocking me. "He seriously fell to his knees just like that? What a useless piece of trash!" "So, Sasha, this is the wimp you used to date? He fell to his knees over a few thousand bucks? Thank goodness you came to your senses and got together with David!" Even Sasha felt embarrassed by my behavior and began yelling at me angrily, "I'm so glad I broke up with a useless piece of trash like you! Get lost! I have nothing to do with you anymore!" "Sasha, I did so much for you without ever complaining over the last four years when we were in university, so won't you return the money to me? Please! I really need the money to save my mother!" I turned to plead humbly with David. "Mr. Jenkins, a few thousand dollars might not be much to you, and it could very well be nothing more than a month's worth of pocket money. But that amount of money could save my mother's life!" Sasha threw me a look of disgust and spat disdainfully, "I've already spent that little bit of money you gave me! Get lost! I don't want to see you ever—ooh!" She stopped talking mid-sentence as David reached a hand under her blouse and squeezed her tit, hard. Then he stood up, staring down at me as he sneered, "You're right. A few thousand dollars is even less than pocket money to me. But, more importantly, why should I even give you the money in the first place?" Everyone watched as he took a step forward, emptied one of the wine glasses on the table, and peed straight into it. Once he was done, he flicked his fingers and sat down again as he mocked me further, "You gave Sasha about six thousand dollars, right? Drink this, and I'll give you sixteen thousand." "That's a great idea!" "David always has the most wicked ideas!" "Oh my god, seriously? Dude, drink it, and I'll throw in another two grand!" The sound of David and his friends' laughter filled the entire room, echoing in my ears. I was already feeling both humiliated and upset after having to kneel, and, finally, I could not take it anymore. Anger took over me as I stood up, grabbed one of the wine bottles on the table, and smashed it down on David's head with all my strength as I yelled, "f**k you!" Crack! There was glass, wine, and blood everywhere. David clutched his bleeding forehead and shrieked, "GET HIM!" I immediately turned to run, but a group of at least seven to eight young men blocked my path. There was no way I could fight so many all by myself. I was still able to fight back at first, but there were just too many of them, and I did not have the strength to fend them all off. It did not take long for me to collapse on the floor and curl up in a corner against the wall as I used my arms to shield my head. But while I managed to protect my head, I could not protect the rest of my body. Their kicks and punches rained down on me, and I could not do anything to defend myself… I finally lost consciousness when someone hit my head so hard that I blacked out. Unbeknownst to me, as the blood from my head flowed down my neck and came into contact with the vintage looking wooden pendant I wore around my neck, it began to give off an eerie glow. I had received this pendant a year ago when I gave a dying homeless man some food. "I am the Sorcerer of Destiny… from now on, you shall be my disciple…" A voice boomed in my head, and a flood of information poured right into my brain. When I regained consciousness again, I realized that I was right next to a dumpster in the alley behind the pub, and I was covered in injuries. At the same time, I had knowledge of something called the Harrows of Destiny in my head. The Harrows of Destiny was split into two components. The first was the Sacred Halo, which encompassed all manner of healing magic. With it, I could regenerate flesh and bones in an instant. The second was the Profane Coil, which was some sort of black magic. It could kill another person with just a thought while leaving no traces behind. "This… this sounds insane!" I wasn't sure if any of this was real. I did not think something so out of this world could possibly happen to me. In order to test if this was reality or just a dream, I decided to use the Sacred Halo on myself. Swoosh! Brilliant sparkles appeared before me and gathered around my body, making it look like there was a halo surrounding me. The halo made me feel really comfortable. I could hear a few faint cracking sounds as my broken bones began to heal. At the same time, I could feel a warmth in my internal organs, as if I was basking under the sun on a cold winter's day. The warmth spreading through my body felt really good. About a minute later, the halo disappeared, and so did the pain I felt earlier. Even the superficial wounds I had were completely healed. "Oh my god! This is amazing!" I started getting really excited. Some technicians knew how to repair furniture, machines, and cars, but I was able to repair bodies! What a lucky man I was! I could not believe how blessed I was. There was no time to revel in this stroke of good luck. I leaped up from the ground and ran toward the hospital. Incredibly enough, despite running almost ten kilometers, I didn't feel tired or even out of breath. That mysterious wooden pendant had not only made me a sorcerer, but it had also transformed my body. I felt as though I had more energy than I could ever use. Once I reached the hospital, I ran straight for my mother's ward. I immediately dashed over to my unconscious mother and placed a hand on her stomach. "Sacred Halo!" Those sparkles appeared again, but this time, they gathered around my mother's body instead. I could see color slowly return to my mother's sallow face. Three minutes later, the halo disappeared. At the same time, my mother opened her eyes. When she noticed me by her side, she smiled faintly and said, "My dear, I feel a bit hungry…" This was a sign that my mother had been healed completely. I felt like crying, but I held my emotions back and said, "Give me a minute, Mom. I'll go get you something to eat." There was a bakery along the next street, so I bought my mother some bread and a small carton of milk. I had just stepped out of the shop when I saw a car driving at high speed toward an old man who was trying to cross the road. "Watch out!" I yelled at the old man. By the time the driver noticed the old man, it was too late. The driver hit the brakes as hard as he could, leaving skid marks on the road, but the car still slammed into the old man. Bang! The old man was sent flying and landed a few meters away from the car. The other cars and pedestrians stopped and ran toward the old man on the road. The crowd that had gathered around the old man started murmuring among themselves. "Oh no! He's already so old. I don't think he'll survive…" "If he'd been a young man, he could still be saved, probably. But I'm not so sure about this geezer." The driver who had knocked the old man down was already in a panic from running someone over. He became even more frantic and started trembling in fear when he heard the comments from the crowd. Meanwhile, the old man was barely breathing. His lips were turning purple, and his face was pale. I rudely pushed my way to the front, not caring what others thought. Squatting down next to the old man, I placed my hand on his body. "Sacred Halo!" I thought silently in my head. A sparkly aura instantly appeared above the old man's body. "Hey, what's he doing?" "He placed his hand on the old man, so… do you think he's trying to heal the old man's injuries?" "Heal the old man's injuries? I think that young fellow is off his rocker!" The comments from the crowd did not make me angry. Instead, I was glad to hear them say these things. I had been worried that other people could see I was using magic, but I had been worried for nothing. It was clear that I was the only one who could see the halo. The light from the halo entered the old man's body, and I could sense the changes happening in his body. This accident had turned out to be a blessing in disguise for the old man. Not only had this halo mended all his broken bones and tissues that he got from the accident itself, but it had also healed some of the ailments the old man was already suffering from way before the accident happened. After the halo disappeared, the old man opened his eyes and looked at me for a long time. "Thank you, young man." "I didn't do much, really. You were lucky enough to avoid any damage to your vital organs. I'm just glad that you're okay." I smiled and left before he could say anything else. When I got back to the ward, my mother wasn't in her bed anymore. I asked the other ladies in the same ward, and they told me that the doctor had taken her for a check-up. I walked out of the ward to look for her and overheard the incredulous voices of some doctors talking to one another along the corridor. "My goodness! How is this possible? How could she have been completely healed?" "This has to be a miracle from God! It's got to be a miracle!" "I can't find any other plausible reason!" A few doctors were staring at the medical report in their hands with looks of disbelief on their faces. My mother was also elated to hear that she was no longer suffering from any ailment, so we signed her discharge papers and left the hospital. While waiting for a cab at the entrance to the hospital, three luxury cars drove toward us at breakneck speed. I reacted quickly, pulling my mother back. The three cars almost knocked the both of us over, missing us by barely an inch. "Do you even know how to drive?!" I yelled angrily with a frown. "It's all right, don't get into trouble with such people," my mother tried to calm me down as she patted my arm. But the three luxury cars did not drive off after that. Instead, they made a U-turn and stopped right in front of us. A flippant yet familiar man hopped out of one of the cars and walked toward me. "I'm amazed at how lucky you two are! You actually managed to dodge the cars in time." I quickly realized why this man looked so familiar. He was one of David's buddies. And sure enough, David, Sasha, and the other young men from the bar earlier proceeded to alight from the other two cars. "Look who we have here! William Floyd, I'm shocked at how lucky you've gotten. I can't believe you're actually still alive." David looked furious when he saw that I seemed perfectly fine and spoke sarcastically. "You're not dead yet, so how could I allow myself to die?" I retorted as I glared at David. After attaining new sorcery skills, my attitude toward him had changed. I was no longer afraid of him. "This must be your poor, unfortunate mother, right? How is SHE not dead yet?" David pointed to my mother and gave me a nasty smile. "Is she discharged? Is she going to wait for death to strike her at home instead? Do you need me to buy you guys a nice urn?" David and the others burst out in loud laughter as they sneered at me in disdain. Their insults infuriated me. "f**k you!" "You have no right to curse at me! Who do you think you are?" David threw a kick at me. "How dare you raise your voice at me! Thrash him!" David's buddies immediately charged at me and began punching and kicking me. My mother immediately ran over and tried to stop them from assaulting me. "Young man! How could you get your friends to hit my son?" "Go away, you stupid old woman!" David yanked my mother's arm and flung her aside, causing her to fall to the ground. Her head hit the curb and started bleeding immediately. "Mom!" Fury rose from within me when I saw my mother bleeding. "You've gone too far!" As I roared angrily at David, I suddenly gained an enormous amount of strength. I pushed aside all the men who were attacking me, ran over to where David was, and grabbed hold of his neck. I lifted him up and flung him with all my might. Bang! David landed on the hood of one of the luxury cars, which caused a dent in the metal. Then, he slid off the hood and fell onto the ground. "Owwww…" David started wailing miserably in pain. I was not going to let him off that easily. I walked over and stepped hard on his thigh. Crack! His left thigh bone instantly broke. The pain he felt was so unbearable that he started screaming hysterically. His buddies snapped out of their shock. "s**t! Get him!" All of them started charging at me. I was not going to let them attack me again. I punched one of them and sent him flying. Then, I turned and sent another flying with a kick. In less than ten seconds, all of them were sprawled on the ground with either a broken arm or a broken leg. Sasha and the girls with her were frozen in shock as they stared at me in horror. They obviously couldn't understand how I had become so formidable after getting thrashed so badly not too long ago. I ignored them and walked straight up to David. David had never suffered so badly or looked so pathetic before. He directly started shouting at me, "How dare you do this to me! Do you know the consequences you'll face for this?" Smack! I slapped him across the face, grabbed his neck, and pulled him up. "No, I don't. Why don't you tell me more?" "William Floyd, that's enough!" Sasha screamed angrily. "Do you know how much trouble you're in right now? If you continue like this, the consequences will be too much for you to handle!" I slapped David again. "Come on, tell me. How much trouble am I in?" David yelled back furiously, "f**k YOU!" "You're not backing down, I see," I said as I slapped him again. David's lips were bleeding, and his eyes were filled with rage. "Go on! Kill me if you dare! Otherwise, I'm going to kill your entire family!" My gaze turned frosty as I thought to myself, "Profane Coil!" A black cloud of smoke materialized, rushed toward David, and went straight into his body. I threw him onto the ground again casually, as if he were nothing more than worthless junk. He screamed in agony, but I was not sure if it was because he had landed on that broken leg of his or if it was because that black cloud of smoke had taken effect on his body. Sasha ran over to check on him while I merely threw him a glance before turning back to attend to my mother. David was going to die soon, so there was no point in continuing this fight. "Let's go, Mom." My mother nodded and walked away with me. David's buddies quickly wriggled away from me as I walked past them to make way for my mother and me. None of them dared to block our way!
